"Paradise" - Excerpt, Short prose

Thirteen thousand feet in the air, her instructor wakes up from behind her. “Ready kid?”  Maybe her instructor said that, or maybe is simply scuttling them toward the door with Audrey attached to his chest like a sock monkey. The other jumper, the scarecrow looking one, winks at her as the plane hovers. On their ascent he’d unbuckled his seatbelt as her instructor’s head leaned against the cream-colored side-paneling behind her.

“Hi,” the scarecrow had said.

“Hello,” Audrey said, looking out the window.

“You scared?”

“No.”

“Not even a little?”

“No.”

“There’s nothing to be afraid of, I do this a hundred times a week. Mike there’s got your back.”

As if on cue, Mike adjusted his head with a snore.

Interview: Denise' Ana Fashions, Vision meets Style
Yoo N'LA Magazine (print)

The funny thing about vision is, it can manifest itself at any age, in any form. What decides your fate is whether you choose to harness it. How many ideas pass through our minds we let go of? Or valiantly try to hold onto? Some even haunt us, calling us to action. Delise’Ana Parker, the founder of Delise’Ana Fashions, held onto hers growing up in Beaufort, South Carolina. By the time she finished college, before moving to sprawling Los Angeles in 2007, she had already opened her own boutique and founded Delise’Ana Fashions.

What we see in her line today is the culmination of forward-thinking sex appeal, and her alter ego, expressed through fashion. Her one of-a-kind-pieces evoke a kind of femme-fatale meets ethereal-goddess. Sophisticated, form hugging, faux leather mermaid gowns meet sexy couture for the weekend-warrior.

They've made their debut in music videos and onto celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Jayde Nicole, Dawn Richard, Faith Evans......

You wear your body like a sheet, little girl, to hide your shoulders from the cool night air.

You pull the covers over your face, little girl, to hide beneath the veil.

Somewhere under that thin cotton weave lies a person. A real person.

She is whole, she has feelings, she reads by candlelight.

Shadows dart like serpent tongues across the pages of her book.

The story she reads is about great magic. Great battles. Great truths.

She consumes fantasy like it’s made of chocolate, hungry for every flavor of word.

She sucks down plot like breath.
She scoots her bottom down further beneath the soft bedsheet and snuggles up to her imagination, a world where wishes come true. Where animals speak. Heroes do what they say. And friends save you before you fall. She strolls along her imagination watching fireflies, bursts of light, like matches struck against the night sky......

Hammer Museum: Ed Ruscha Exhibit
LA Magazine (blog)

Even as a fan of On the Road, I grew into the daily grind of the working-world after graduation from Berkeley and lost that raw anti-establishmentarianism the Beat Generation once evoked in me. To visit Ed Ruscha’s exhibit at the Hammer, is to reawaken this feeling. It is similar to walking up the stairs in MC Escher’s painting; I am not sure where my pauses and my questions begin.

It intimidates me slightly to write about the Ed Ruscha: On the Road exhibit (showing now until October 2). There are six canvases and ten sketch drawings using his signature all-caps text from On the Road, set against snowcapped or sun-toasted mountain landscapes......

It is early morning in Los Angeles and Joel Arquillos, the Executive Director of 826 LA, sits at a humble desk upstairs in the loft-office-space squeezed between stacks of paperwork, a laptop, two printers, and bookcases filled to the brim with children’s chapbooks. The chapbooks, collections of poetry and some short stories, were all written by students and published in-house, thanks to those two tireless printers.

Downstairs is a Victorian-esque parlor, the main tutoring space, straight out of a storybook.

It is quiet this morning.

The motion-sensor lights flicker off then on as a breeze rustles the paperwork on Joel’s desk......
